Position: James K. Hosmer Special Collections Internship
Library: Hennepin County Library

Description: The James K. Hosmer Special Collections Department consists mainly of the Minneapolis Collection, which is comprised of materials related to the history of Minneapolis, such as books, photos, maps, biographical materials, clippings, programs, documents and many archival collections. Many materials from this collection are available digitally through the Library s webpage. Other collections in the department include the Kittleson World War II collection, the 19th Century American Studies Collection, the Huttner Abolition and Anti-Slavery Collection and the Hoag Mart Twain Collection.

Commitment: One semester March 2012 - May 2012; 8 to10 hours per week for a total of 120 hours.

Description: The Patricia D. Lundborg Cancer Library, located within the Cancer Care Center at Regions Hospital, is an excellent resource for those who want to learn more about a cancer diagnosis. Conveniently located near the State Capital in St. Paul, the library is open to anyone in the community and offers a cancer-related consumer health collection of over 1000 books and videos that may be checked out for three weeks. Online resources are also available. The library is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Reporting to the University Librarian, the director provides administrative and programmatic leadership for a robust portfolio of services. Celebrating its 40th year, Minitex is a joint program of the University of Minnesota Libraries and the Minnesota Office of Higher Education, with additional contracts for services.

Originally established to provide resource sharing from the University to academic and state government libraries within the state, Minitex now encompasses contract services to public and school libraries as well as libraries in North and South Dakota. Its suite of services includes: discovery and resource sharing (one of the highest volume agencies in the U.S.), a regional courier delivery system, the Electronic Library of Minnesota (licensed content for Minnesota citizens), cooperative reference services, cooperative storage through the Minnesota Library Access Center, brokered digitization services through the Minnesota Digital Library, library staff development programs, and procurement services for myriad library products and services. A dynamic and responsive organization, Minitex repositions its resources to respond to emergent needs of libraries in the region. Minitex programmatic funding through appropriations and contracts in FY11 was $8.6 million, with another $13 million in procurement transactions. Minitex staff total 65, with an additional 13 FTE in student staff.

Social Search Engine Evaluators provide feedback on search engine results by measuring the relevance and usefulness of web pages in correlation to predefined queries, by providing comparative analysis of sets of search engine results and various other techniques.

All candidates are required to take and pass a two-part qualification exam before becoming a Social Search Engine Evaluator. Part 1 of the exam contains 24 theory based questions. Part 2 of the exam contains 150 simulated evaluation tasks. Supplied study materials can be used during both parts of the exam.
